Your body is a self-healing organism. Our physiology texts teach us that the body is brilliantly equipped with natural self-repair mechanisms that prevent and kill cancer cells we produce every day, fight infectious agents, repair broken proteins, and keep our coronary arteries open and naturally fight the aging process.
Illness can be seen as simply a message from your body that says, “Wait a minute, something is wrong. You are ignoring something very important.” And in healing there is no separation between the body, the mind, the emotions or the spirit – all need to be in balance to be a healthy human being.
We also know that our autonomic nervous system has two major operating systems — the sympathetic nervous system, which produces the body's stress response, also known as "fight or flight"; and the parasympathetic nervous system, which produces the body's relaxation response, also known as "rest and digest." This is our homeostatic state when the body is in equilibrium.
But here's what most of us don’t recognize: The body's natural self-repair mechanisms only fully function when the nervous system is in relaxation response.
Enjoy life more. Learn to recognize the sources of stress in your life, manage stress-related symptoms and illnesses, develop healthy lifestyle habits, practice deep relaxation techniques to manage the fight or flight response and take better care of yourself.
